Inkling Explorations: June 2016

I was going to post the Richmond Gardens scene from The Scarlet Pimpernel, but then after reading Cordy and Miss March's posts, I remembered another Alcott rose scene.  One that I die laughing over every time.  It is from Jack and Jill.  Jill, Merry, Molly and several of the boys are making May Baskets.  At one point the girls read their verses aloud.  Here is Molly's verse and what follows.

  "That's perfectly sweet! Mine isn't; but I meant it to be funny," said Molly, as if there could be any doubt about the following ditty:

 "Dear Grif,
  Here is a whiff
  Of beautiful spring flowers;
  The big red rose
  Is for your nose,
  As toward the sky it towers.

  "Oh, do not frown
  Upon this crown
  Of green pinks and blue geranium
  But think of me
  When this you see,
  And put it on your cranium."

   "O Molly, you will never hear the last of that if Grif gets it," said Jill, as the applause subsided, for the boys pronounced it "tip-top."

  "Don't care, he gets the worst of it any way, for there is a pin in that rose, and if he goes to smell the mayflowers underneath he will find a thorn to pay for the tack he put in my rubber boot. I know he will play me some joke to-night, and I mean to be first if I can," answered Molly, settling the artificial wreath round the orange-colored canoe which held her effusion.

Big Kitties, Little Kitties and Space Kitties

We have 5 kittens right now and I would share them all with you.  First though, is this cat.  The other morning Daisy (our dog) was barking up a storm.  When I looked out the window, I found she had treed a strange cat on the Pumphouse roof.

It was very amusing to see her laying down below, and the cat all hunched up sooo far above her!

I think he might be the father of some of our kittens.

A few minutes after I snapped these pictures, he made a run for it and she treed him on the Barn.

I have no idea how he got up there.  But she was jumping almost all the way up to him.

That had to have been uncomfortable.

I didn't see where he went after this.  And now for the pictures of our kittens.

This is Celeborn.  Jenny was really hoping he would be a girl so that we could name her Galadriel.  Because he is a Fire Tip like the tom above, I think that tom is probably their father.

Cadwallader.  The kids are obsessed with that name and since our sister wouldn't name her son that, they had to settle for a kitten.

Milo.  Have you ever seen or read Milo and Otis?  They kids love that story and this cat just as rascally as that Milo.  He, Caddie and Celeborn are siblings.

Nim.  He is an adorable little thing.

And Button.  She and Nim are siblings.  She is one girl amongst 4 boys, but she doesn't take any nonsense from them!

Aren't they just adorable?

Cousin Kate by Georgette Heyer

I didn't like this one as much as I like most of her books.  It was rather odd.  But I did really like the hero and that does have a bit to do with the fact that his name is Philip and I have a bit of a thing for guys named Philip.

Battlerama! Super Tweens to the Rescue by Mary M. Hall-Rayford

I read this to preview it for my little siblings.  It was interesting.


The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R Tolkien

Ahhhhh!!  This is my own special copy!  But I still don't understand why the picture of Frodo on the front is from The Two Towers.  We have plenty of amazing  shots of Frodo in FOTR, so why can't the picture be from there?  And when I was re-reading this, I came up with a little head cannon.

So remember how, when the Company leaves Lothlorien, Sam is talking with an Elf about the Elven rope and the Elf says that if they had known that Sam liked rope making, they could have shown him how they made it? Well, what if when Sam got to Elvenhome, that Elf was one who had survived the battles and sailed and remembered Sam and his love for rope making so then taught it to him.
